My favorite definition:
noun\ ˈnərd \
an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit
In the last decade there has been a shift in American society's attitude toward nerds. Not so long ago nerd was a derogatory term used to make those who differed from the mainstream feel further alienated. However, now being a nerd holds a certain amount of respect. Many feel that the title implies a high level of intelligence or passion for something specific. You can find t-shirts with sayings like, "Talk nerdy to me."
What caused this shift? What does it really mean to be a nerd? Over the next few months I want to attempt to answer these questions and more. Stay tuned and please feel free to contact me or comment about your ideas on the subject!
